Introduction
At Gemma Lighting, we use LED technology for all our lighting solutions as we understood the many benefits and potential LED had compared to traditional lighting which is why when Gemma Lighting started manufacturing luminaires back in 2003, LED was the light source used.
Benefits of LED Bollard Lighting
Long Lifespan
When compared to traditional bollard lights, such as incandescent, Fluorescent, or Metal Halide, LED Bollard lights have a far superior lifespan. Usually, traditional bollard lights use lamps (light bulbs) which deteriorate over time causing the lamp to burn out before suffering complete failure. LEDs do suffer from the light output degrading over time, but it decreases far more gradually, a process called “lumen depreciation” and it rarely results in total failure.
Instead, a LED luminaire would typically use a rating such as L90B10, where ‘L’ refers to the percentage of lumen output compared to the initial lumens, and ‘B’ refers to the percentage of failures where lamps/luminaires lumen output fell outside of the criteria set by ‘L’. For this example, L90B10 at 100,000hrs means that at 100,000hrs the LED bollard lighting is set to achieve 90% of its initial lumen output at the time of manufacture, with only 10% failing to reach 90%. It’s important to note that the 10% doesn’t mean complete failure to operate, just that the lumen output might fall to 89% of the initial lumen output at the time of manufacture.
The average LED light engine lasts over 100,000 hours, which is around 5x more than the previous fluorescent technology. The LED bollard lighting housing itself is also long-lasting due to the materials used in manufacturing. Our LED bollards are made from die-cast aluminium, so by that nature, they are not prone to rust and are extremely robust and corrosion resistant. This is supported by our LED bollard range having lighting solutions which carry IP65 and IK10 ratings which shows they have passed the highest level of testing for protection again ingress and impacts.
Performance
LED bollard lighting has increased performance compared to traditional lamp-based bollards. This is because the LED light source, or light engine, is designed as a total solution, maximising efficiency through decades of electronic circuit board design for the light source and driver (ballast). Focusing on the LED light source itself, they have a higher quality of light, with higher lux levels, better uniformity, better colour rendering, and overall higher lumen output.
As well as this, they offer a wide range of colours and colours temperatures and single spectrum colours, where you can fine-tune the wavelength of light without the use of filters or gels, like traditional light sources. LEDs also have the benefits of instantaneous illumination without any delays for restrikes or time required for them to warm up.
Similar to traditional bollard lights, dimmable LED bollard lights can have their lumen output reduced to suit your project requirements.
LED bollard lighting also has the benefit of the light source being more robust when compared to delicate traditional light sources such as fluorescent or metal halide. LED light sources can operate safely in cold temperatures, so they are perfect as a light source for your bollards during cold weather periods.
Energy Efficiency
When switching to LED bollard lighting from traditional bollard lighting solutions, everyone will easily feel a difference in their electricity bill. LED lights consume a lower amount of energy, compared to traditional bollard lights which use fluorescent or metal halide. Research shows that it only takes a 6-watt LED to produce the same lumen output that a 40-watt incandescent does.
This is because LEDs have brilliant efficacy, meaning they have incredibly high lumen output per Watt and turn about 70% of their energy into light, whereas traditional light sources were hugely inefficient and most of the energy used would be to generate heat in a ratio where the light output would almost be a by-product.
The efficiency of LED bollard lighting is also helped by the fact that LEDs are directional and be aided with optics to create beam angles which focus and direct the light to where it is required so there is no wasted light. Traditional light sources could not benefit from optics and instead had to use reflectors to capture all the light and direct it where possible, which makes for a very inefficient system.
Environmental-Friendly
LED lighting is the most environmentally friendly lighting solution out there. For instance, reducing a 60-watt metal halide lamp with a LED light source reduces, approximately, 160kg of C02 emissions per year. LED sources also don’t contain dangerous chemicals such as mercury which is found in fluorescent lamps.
LED light sources also can be manufactured at specific colour temperatures such as 2700k and 2200k, or even single spectrum colours such as Red or Amber, which heavily reduces the blue light content, or even removing it altogether, which makes the LED bollard lights bat friendly and insect friendly too.
Our Options
At Gemma Lighting, we offer different LED Bollard lighting that has different purposes for your project’s needs. We also consider different parameters that can affect the functionality of our products. That is why we use premium high-quality materials, such as OSRAM LEDs, and DRIVER, to ensure accuracy for our sensors and long-lasting lighting solutions.
PIR LED Bollard
A PIR LED Bollard is a bollard with a motion sensor installed to detect infrared energy produced from body heat and this is used to detect movement outside of buildings or public spaces.
PIR LED bollards can also be used to save operating costs through maximum energy consumption reduction by only operating when needed.
A PIR LED bollard can also be paired with a DALI LED bollard so instead of turning off, it dims to a set level, such as 30% lumen output, and when triggered it increases to 100% lumen output.
A PIR LED bollard is the perfect solution for those wanting an extra level of safety and security on their premises.
Emergency LED Bollard
An Emergency LED Bollard is a bollard with a battery backup system that makes it possible for the luminaire to switch on in case of an emergency such as a power outage.
Lots of legal guidelines apply to interior lighting, but very little to exterior lighting. It is equally important to have emergency lighting on your site, especially if it’s a business complex, to help guide and navigate people to a safe meeting point.
Typically, we would advise 1 in 3 LED bollard luminaires should be an emergency LED bollard, and in addition to this they should be placed outside of every emergency exit.
LED Bollard with Photocell
An LED Bollard with Photocell is an automated LED lighting bollard. Similar to PIR LED bollards, the LED Bollards with Photocell uses a lux sensor to detect the lux levels in the area to operate the LED bollard light on and off.
It doesn’t need adjustment for sunrise or sunset shifts with the seasons as the lux sensor has a trigger point of 70 lux for the photocell with NEMA socket or 35 lux for the mini Photocell which is what is installed when ordering a LED bollard with Photocell.
This type of lighting solution is perfect for those looking for a worry-free experience when it comes to exterior lighting for your business with an inexpensive stand-alone control solution to help provide additional energy savings.
AstroDIM LED Bollard
An AstroDIM LED Bollard is a stand-alone dimmable LED bollard solution that allows autonomous dimming without the need for manual lighting switching during the predefined set times by the LED Bollard Manufacturer.
These can be set according to a time-based dimming profile schedule or Astro-based theoretical calculations of annual average sunrise and sunset times.
A LED bollard that uses an AstroDIM protocol is great for installation in areas that are more remote and only have an electrical point so no ability to add cabled controls like DALI.
AstroDIM LED bollards are also great for areas that become empty during nighttime and don’t need lighting from dusk to dawn.
DALI LED Bollard
A DALI LED Bollard is a LED bollard lighting solution that has an integrated DALI driver which is compatible with a DALI control system. DALI, Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, is a protocol that allows users digital configuration and control of lighting.
DALI LED bollards are perfect for those looking for precision and consistency for multiple devices at the same time on their premises along with all the monitoring and reporting perks provided through the DALI protocol.
A DALI LED bollard can also be coupled with an Emergency LED bollard, where the emergency unit can operate self-test reporting through the DALI protocol back to the control system.
