Gemma Lighting appoint Kevin James as 'UK Lighting Director'

Craig Manuel, Managing Director of Gemma Lighting is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin James as UK Lighting Director.

In this key position, Kevin will be directly responsible for the day-to-day operation and growth of Gemma Lighting Limited throughout the UK.

Kevin comes to Gemma after a successful 25 year career in commercial lighting, with senior roles at Weblight, DW Lighting and Dalkia. Kevin is highly regarded in the lighting industry working on major projects with top blue chip companies such as Sainsbury’s, Iceland, BHS, Marks and Spencer and Argos.

Kevin joins Gemma Lighting as the company reports a fourth year of double digit growth and winning a number of business awards, proving there is a real desire within the lighting market for a quality UK LED Lighting Manufacturer.

Kevin Commented ‘I am honoured and excited to accept this position with Gemma Lighting, who have an impressive history in designing and manufacturing LED lighting here in the UK. As LED standards are introduced, Gemma Lightings quality of product and flexibility of manufacture guarantees it is well positioned to become a major player in the industry’

Kevin will report to Mark Major, who having occupied the role of UK Sales Director, has been appointed Group Sales Director, responsible for overseeing the expansion of Gemma Lighting Internationally.

Gemma Lighting ‘Highly Commended’ for Innovation

Businesses across the south were again in the spotlight last night as the very best in business turned out to celebrate the Johnston Press South Business Awards.

The spectacular evening held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton saw the regional finalists from across the south come together to find out who the real champions are.”

Gemma Lighting had previously won ‘Innovation of the Year’ and ‘Overall business of the year’ at the Portsmouth News awarded hosted earlier this year.

Brian Johnson, who judged every category on behalf of BAE Systems, said: ‘We just felt that because Gemma had done so well in each of the categories they were far and away the business which we felt ticked every box.

‘The firm is innovative, it is exporting, it is expanding, and all while manufacturing is in decline.’

Gemma Lighting is once again celebrating after being ‘High Commended’ for Innovation. The title was awarded to Gemma Lighting to recognise the advances the company had made in LED and Solar Lighting, with exports leading the way for the Portsmouth based manufacturer.

After picking up the award the firm’s Managing Director, Craig Manuel, said: ‘We are delighted about picking up this award, our team have worked exceptionally hard this year to remain market leaders and develop ground breaking technology’

The award ceremony was again hosted by TV star Fred Dinenage who commented ‘“I love these awards this event in particular, because this is the crème de la crème, this is the battle of the giants.

Gemma Lighting Awarded ‘Certificate of Recommendation’ from Government of Dubai for LED High Bay Lighting

Following six years of key projects with the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), Gemma Lighting have been awarded a ‘Certificate of Recommendation’ from DEWA and the Government of Dubai for their LED High Bay Lighting.

DEWA are one of the largest utilities providers in the world, and have a vision to be a sustainable world-class utility. Formed in 1992, DEWA’s mission is to meet customer satisfaction and promote Dubai’s vision through delivery of electricity and water services at a world-class level of reliability, efficiency, safety and sustainability.

With the help of long term partner Value Additions, over 2000 LED fixtures were successfully installed into DEWA properties across Dubai with results from Gemma’s Sovereign LED High Bays far exceeding the expectations of DEWA.

Gemma Lightings managing director Craig Manuel commented “There was a lot of competition for this prestigious project. However, we were able to demonstrate to DEWA that the quality of our LED High Bay Light was superior to any other product on the market”

The Sovereign LED High Bay is manufactured by Gemma Lighting in the UK, which allows Gemma to control quality to the highest standard thus ensuring that the Sovereign met the high standard required by DEWA.

Manufacturing manager John King said “We were pleased to welcome the DEWA team to our UK factory where we had the opportunity to show case our factory and demonstrate the measures we have in place to ensure each and every product is made to the highest standard”

The Sovereign LED High Bay is flexible in its design with adjustable side modules allowing for a range of photometric foot prints. The Sovereign also features high lumens for low wattage, excellent uniformity and a low glare rating.

As well as offering a financial saving to DEWA of more than £2.5m over the lifespan of the scheme, the authority also dramatically reduced their CO2 emissions, from 856 carbon tonnes per annum down to just 273 tonnes per annum. The result of these savings means that over the lifespan of the LED lighting scheme, DEWA will have saved more than 10,500 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Gemma Lighting shortlisted for Trethowans Award for Excellence Through Innovation

Gemma Lighting are once again enjoying the plaudits after being nominated for another Business Award, their sixth nomination of 2013.

The LED lighting manufacturers have already enjoyed success at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards earlier this year, and have now been shortlisted for the Trethowans Award for Excellence Through Innovation at the South Coast Business Awards on Friday 12th July at the Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton.

The judges said they were very impressed by Gemma’s entry, and the nomination is further acknowledgement of the cutting edge LED lighting technology Gemma has to offer their customers.

Also up for the award are Bluestar, the Mayflower Theatre and Saab Seaeye, with the winners announced at next month’s black tie event.

The nomination is Gemma Lighting’s sixth of the year, and makes for a busy time for Gemma as later this year they travel to Brighton as one of the companies taking part in the Southern Business Awards in Brighton.

The South Coast Business Awards aim to boost standards, spur on competition and champion the sterling contribution firms make to the local economy, and in 2013 the guest speaker at the ceremony will be Michael Portillo.

Gemma Lighting at WETEX conference Dubai 2013

Gemma Lighting joined over a thousand companies from across the globe exhibiting at the WETEX 2013 conference in Dubai earlier this month.

Now in its 15th year, WETEX (water, energy, technology and environment exhibition) attracts organisations from all over the world, and discusses sustainability in Dubai using the latest technologies available across a variety of markets.

Taking place alongside the Dubai global energy forum 2013, the event was held at the Dubai international convention and exhibition centre (DICEC) in the heart of the business district.

Presenting at the event in conjunction with our partners Value Addition (FZC), Gemma Lighting attended to promote their range of award-winning, energy saving LED lighting technology.

The Gemma team were on hand to demonstrate to visitors of the stand how LED lighting can make drastic reductions in energy costs, maintenance fees and carbon emissions.

Sales Director Mark Major also conducted one the programme’s scheduled presentations on LED lighting, giving advice on what to look for when purchasing LED as well as comparing it with other lighting technologies such as sodium, halogen and metal halide fittings.

Founder and Chairman of the WETEX conference Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer is also Managing Director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, who themselves are major users of Gemma Lighting’s LED products.

Gemma were pleased to be a part of the event, demonstrating how their UK manufactured range can provide efficient and cost-effective means of safeguarding energy usage.

Gemma Lighting invest in new £100,000 LED Photometric Laboratory

UK LED lighting specialists Gemma Lighting have again expanded their R&D capabilities by investing in a new £100,000 purpose built LED photometric laboratory.

The new LED photometric laboratory is situated at Gemma’s UK head office in Portsmouth, Hampshire and contains a customised Radiant Zemax ProMetric Near-Field Measurement System (PM-NFMS).

The PM-NFMS, provided by Pro-Lite Technology, will provide Gemma Lighting with accurate on-site luminance distribution data, further enhancing product design at the company and assisting the Gemma Lighting development team.

Measuring brightness, colour and spectrum, the PM-FPMS system will capture complete images of each Gemma Lighting product in order to provide comprehensive information than cannot be obtained from more traditional spotmeter-based measurements alone.

The new system will enhance the production cycle at Gemma by reducing time taken in having new products tested off site, and with the NFMS’ ability to automatically produce IES files the new laboratory feature will also be used by the lighting design team to benefit Gemma Lighting customers.

The installation of the ProMetric System is another sign of Gemma Lighting’s continuing growth as the firm continues to break sales figures and expand its operation.

Gemma Lighting named 'Overall Business of the Year'

Growing LED lighting specialists Gemma Lighting are celebrating after receiving five awards and being named ‘Overall Business of the Year’ at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards.

The glittering ceremony was held at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Friday evening, and Gemma were honoured with the top prize of the night, being named by the judging panel as ‘Overall Business of the Year.

It was a fantastic evening for the UK-based LED lighting manufacturers, who were winners or runners-up in every category for which they entered into.

As well as taking the top award for overall company of the year, Gemma also scooped the ‘Innovation of the Year’ prize in recognition of their innovative solar LED street lighting systems being exported around the world.

The judging panel for the awards pointed to the fact that Gemma are expanding to buck the trend in the manufacturing industry as a whole and said the firm ‘ticked every box’.

Craig Manuel said of the awards: “We want to thank our staff, our shareholders for standing by us and our customers. It’s brilliant to be recognised.”

Sales Director Mark Major spoke of the pride and excitement of the Gemma Lighting team at winning the awards, saying: “We are ecstatic about picking up these awards – they are for all the team, to show them how fantastic they are.”

Gemma Lighting celebrate after being shortlisted for 4 business awards!

UK LED lighting manufacturer Gemma Lighting is celebrating after being shortlisted for four different awards at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards.

2012 was a fantastic year for Gemma Lighting, as the company went from strength to strength; smashing the previous sales year’s figures and securing large export orders to the likes of Dubai and the Falklands Islands.

This amazing year has seen Gemma nominated for Small / Medium Business of the Year, Exporter of the Year, Innovation of the Year and Achievement of the year in the annual awards event.

It is the first year Gemma had been entered into the awards, and with no other company being shortlisted for more awards than Gemma Lighting, it is a fine achievement for the Portsmouth-based LED lighting specialists.

The News Business Excellence Awards are now in their 11th year and honour all those companies which help make the Portsmouth region a success.

The gala awards evening will be held at the Guildhall Portsmouth on Friday 15th February and will be hosted by Fred Dinenage MBE.
